Myofunctional Therapy – Helping Your Child Breathe, Speak & Grow Better
As parents, we want the best for our children—including being healthy, sleeping well and speaking clearly.
But did you know that small habits like mouth breathing, thumb sucking, or a tongue tie can affect the shape of your child’s face, their attention span, and the amount of oxygen they get to their brain.
Enter: Myofunctional therapy
Myofunctional therapy, or Myo, is a gentle, exercise-based approach that helps correct these habits early. By supporting proper tongue placement, breathing, and muscle function, we can prevent and even correct these awful consequences.
Early intervention is the key to preventing bigger challenges like speech delays, sleep apnea, and dental concerns later in life.
Not sure if your child would benefit from Myofunctional Therapy. No worries! Let’s take a FAST look.
Let’s take a look at some signs that there may be an underlying myofunctional concern.

How Myofunctional Therapy Helps
Using fun and simple exercises, we teach kids (and adults) how to properly position their tongue, lips, and jaw to encourage healthy development. By strengthening these muscles and correcting oral habits, we help children:
✅ Breathe through their nose for better oxygen flow to the brain
✅ Sleep better – Proper breathing leads to deeper, more restful sleep
✅ Reduce snoring and sleep apnea risk for better overall health
✅ Decrease irritation to the tonsils and adenoids for better breathing
✅ Improve tongue posture for improved breathing and easier swallowing
✅ Improve speech clarity – Addressing tongue placement for better pronunciation
✅ Develop a healthier bite – Supporting better dental and jaw alignment
✅ Prevent future dental concerns – Early intervention can reduce the need for extensive orthodontics
Myofunctional therapy is a team effort!
At the heart of every good treatment is a team - and Myo is no different. We love to work with health care teams to make sure your child receives the most comprehensive care possible.
Who are we talking about?
Myofunctional therapists like us
Dentists
Orthodontisits
Oral Surgeons
Otolaryngologists or ENTs
Allergists
Sleep Medicine
Why should everyone be involved?
As much as we would like to, we can’t fix everything.
Dentists, Orthodontists, and oral surgeons work hard to move bones such as teeth or jaws and expand pallets. While myofunctional therapy can support these changes or even cause positive changes with the bones in the mouth/face, we don’t focus on moving bones. These professionals can also assist in releasing tethered oral tissues (like tongue ties or lips ties). As myofunctional therapists we help before and after these procedures to increase tongue function for breathing, swallowing and speech.
ENT (Otolaryngologists), Allergists and sleep medicine professionals work hard on the airway. Some patients will need medicines or surgeries to correct breathing issues, especially severe issues that don’t allow them to breathe through their nose.
By working with your child’s health care team we can focus on correcting the root cause of your child’s dental and breathing difficulties. This way they don’t have to go through the treatments or the corrections again.
Speech Therapy for Kids & Early Intervention Matters!
The earlier we address these concerns, the better the long-term results. Investing in your child’s speech, oral, and airway health today can prevent costly and complex health issues in their future.
