Aphasia Therapy at Sunny Side Up Therapy & Consulting

Adult Speech Therapy: Regain Your Voice, Rebuild Your Confidence

Aphasia can make everyday communication frustrating, but you're not alone. At Sunny Side Up Therapy & Consulting, we provide personalized, evidence-based therapy to help individuals with aphasia regain their ability to speak, understand, read, and write. Our goal is to empower you to communicate confidently and reconnect with your loved ones.

What is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to the brain, often due to stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), neurological conditions like dementia, or following cancer treatment. It affects a person's ability to express and understand language, but it does not affect intelligence.

 Types of Aphasia:

There are several different types of aphasia. Let’s talk about a few of them:

  • Broca’s Aphasia – makes expressing yourself difficult because the words seem to get lost after you decide what you want to say. People living with Broca’s aphasia can understand and comprehend most of what is happening around them, which makes it very easy to get frustrated when they can’t communicate.

  • Wernicke’s Aphasia – this type of aphasia makes it easy for words to come out, but they are rarely the words the person wanted to say. The extra tricky part is that the person living with Wernicke's aphasia usually isn't aware that the wrong words came out.

  • Global Aphasia – People living with global aphasia have significant difficulty understanding the world around them and communicating most things including hunger, and other needs. While it may seem impossible to reach the person inside, I promise they are there. They just need a lifeline to communicate with.

  • Anomic Aphasia – While this can be seen as the mildest of the aphasia’s, to the person experiencing it, it can feel anything but mild. People with Anomic aphasia can communicate many things, but have trouble thinking of the words they want when they want them.
